Where?
Located in the state of Florida in the United States, specifically in the area of Big Bend, the Steinhatchee river flows over 55.5 kilometers. It takes its source from Mallory swamp and passes by throughout the county of Lafayette. There is a pond of drainage of 586 square miles (1,520 Kilometers2)
History:
In the past, we also knew the river under the names of Hittenhatchee, Esteenhatchee and Isteenhatchee but it goes back many years ago.
Area:
In the area, there are two communities around the river : Jena and Steinhatchee. The river is not developped and serves only of recreation and bearing for fishes. A lot of fishes are caaught in this river like the sheepshead, mullet, gag and red grouper, spanish mackerel, white grunt, hogfish, stone and blue crab. A part of the river (approximately 1 km) passes underground, under the road and 13 km are waterfalls.
Deadman Bay:
Deadman bay was drawn on cards for the first time at about the 1500s. The first people to have crossed the ground there are Spanish conquistadors who came to colonize the region. Furthermore, the Deadman bay is one of numerous bays of the Steinhatchee river.
