As you probably know, there’s a lot of beautiful lakes and rivers within the United States! But did you know that one of these lakes is the fifth largest in the world? Of course, Lake Michigan is this lake! It is also an amazing one, surrounded by plenty of beautiful touristic cities, beaches and parks.
Firstly, Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Four of the Great Lakes are located in the U.S. and in Canada, but Lake Michigan is the only one completely located within the United States. From west to east, it is shared by the U.S states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Of the Great Lakes, it is the third largest by surface area, after Lake Superior and Lake Huron, and the second largest by volume. It is also slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Viginia.
Secondly, the beauty and the recreational opportunities offered by this lake attracted a large seasonal population, that often have summer homes along the waterfront. There’s million of people living along Lake Michigan's shores, mainly in the Chicago and Milwaukee metropolitan areas. These cities on the shores of Lake Michigan include, among others : Chicago, Portage, Highland Park, Harbor Springs and Milwaukee.
Thirdly, Lake Michigan has many beaches, with off-white and soft sand. The region is often referred to as the "Third Coast" of the United States, after those of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The water is usually clear and cool, even in the late summer months, because of the wind. But these beaches are still amazing! There are also numerous of state and beautiful local parks located on the shores of the lake or on islands inside the lake, including a zoo.
Finally, this lake is a really amazing one to see because of his huge size and because of all the gorgeous landscape and cities surrounding. Of course, this is an inescapable things to visit in the United States, especially if you like to see wonderful scenery and canoeing!
