Columbia

By Jérémy Lévesque and Marguerite Tousignant

This article was created by students in enriched english (second language) to inform people about the Coastal Rainforests in British-Columbia. The describe topics will be: a general description of the place, the people of B.C. and the environmental status of this Canada’s magnificent province.

To start your journey, you need to know about the geography of the place.

B.C.’s Coastal Rainforests are near the impressive Appalachian mountain chain

and the rest of the province is quite flat. The foggy air of the province is creating

fog drips. Added to mountain’s melted snow in spring, it’s creating countless lakes,

rivers and creeks who all end in the Pacific ocean. If you are a bird fan, it’s a place

not to toss aside! There’s many different species of birds but they are just a small

amount of the animal diversity. In fact, B.C. is the province with the highest

biomass per hectares in the world.

B.C. has the most biological diversity in Canada but it’s also the

province with the most species at risk of extinction because of a

big problem: logging. This problem exist since a long time, they

lost more than 50% of the original trees before 2000. B.C’s

government still deliberate on what to do with the rest of the forest.

Many foundations try to conserve the rest of the trees by asking

money support.

It’s always a plus to know the history of the people we visit and why they live as they do. So, let’s start by the origins. The first massive immigration wave in British-Columbia was in the 1820’s when people from all around the world hear rumors about gold in the Fraser river. Most of the immigrants are coming from Asia, Germany, Italy and Russia. This event is why B.C. is one of the most diversified province of Canada. Nowadays, there’s a big economic gap between the immigrants and the firsts nations and the government is trying to fill this hole.

We hope that you’ve learn about this fabulous place and its breathtaking landscape.
